Once the dog stops howling I notice the ants. They’re climbing up my legs, across my stomach and into the styrofoam container holding my burrito. I would later inadvertently transport at least a dozen of the busy creatures into my apartment. But in that moment, reclining on a hill of brown, scratchy grass, the sun trust-falling slowly backwards into the arms of the far side of earth as Aaron Read and I pour various hot sauces onto our dinners—I don’t mind.

you didn’t yell that time, and they took it better. You get tense when you have to pay bills. I get tense when I haven’t had my coffee. Reaching up, I slide the tacky 1970s amber glass open to reveal the shelves above your kitchen counter. They are empty except for a bag of salt and a plastic container of honey that has more stuck on the outside than what’s left inside.

This Friday, August 3, marked the kick-off of Pride weekend in Vancouver. Pride is a time of music, dancing, unity. It’s about sparkles, sequins, and rainbows. It’s the most rainbow time of year.  

But this is also a time to remember that Pride was, and still is, above all a protest.
 
It just so happens that Queer as Funk, Vancouver’s own LGBTQ funk band, is celebrating its five year anniversary, and there couldn’t be a more perfect kickoff for Pride weekend than that!
