Visual artists Graeme Berglund and George Vergette invite the public to experience the fifth anniversary of Ce Soir Noir, a barely-organized, family-friendly FREE community picnic event. The concept is simple: wear all black clothing, bring food and drinks, a blanket to sit on and some friends. Enjoy music, good conversation, maybe meet a few new people and revel in the peaceful resplendence of East Vancouver.

The first event held in 2015, was a tongue in cheek response to Vancouver’s incredibly popular and exclusive Diner et Blanc (also held on the 8th this year). George and Graeme had hoped that a few dozen friends would join in, but instead over 1500 people showed up wearing black. It was a strong reflection of the desire for a community-driven event that will gather people of all stripes and the continued interest and response has been incredible.

“This was really only intended to be a one-off, but in its simplicity of just simply showing up and chilling on a lawn for a few hours, people want to keep coming back in black,” says Berglund.

"As artists, we are interested in the cultural community of Vancouver. This is an easy way to contribute to allied accessibility, in a city renowned for its high cost of living, where even entertainment can be cost-prohibitive. For five years, it has been free to the public."  

George and Graeme have once again partnered with Backpack Buddies this year to bring in non-perishable food and money donations for children of the DTES with hundreds of people donating over the last half decade.

Blankie. Food. Friends. Chillers only. No dogs. No open flames. And if it rains, it is most definitely canceled.
