Digital Designer

SAD Mag is looking for a Digital Designer!

SAD Mag (Stories, Art & Design) is a Vancouver-based biannual magazine covering arts & culture, publishing the photography, designs and writing of some of our greatest local creatives.

Founded in 2009, SAD Mag has published 23 issues and gained a loyal readership in Vancouver and beyond. We are currently seeking a talented, creative individual to take over the role of  Marketing & Promotions Designer. This is a great learning opportunity for a junior marketing and communications professional, with a flexible time commitment suitable for a student or person with another job. The schedule is flexible, making it perfect for students or others with concurrent professional/personal responsibilities.

The Digital Designer works closely with the Creative Director and the editorial team to promote each issue of the magazine, events, and web content.

  • Coordinating posts to social media channels (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram)

  • Designing and sending Mailchimp e-blasts to SAD Mag subscriber list

  • Creating event listings (Eventbrite/Facebook event posts) and promotional materials (flyers, banners, handouts)

  • Implementing and managing web ads on SADMag.ca

  • Updating and maintaining the SAD Mag advertising sales kit

  • Supporting the Creative Director with other small design tasks

Shared responsibilities of all members of the SAD Mag collective:

  • Attending magazine events (launches, art/book fairs)

  • Cultivating a welcoming, inclusive organization

  • Championing the Vancouver arts & culture community

  • Participating in regular collective meetings

  • Reporting to the board of directors, as required

  • Must be based in Vancouver, BC

  • Applicants who can commit for a full year (2 issues) or longer are strongly preferred

  • Proficient with InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator

  • Some experience in a communications or marketing role

  • Experience with Squarespace, Mailchimp, and social media management tools (e.g., Hootsuite; Facebook Insights, etc)

  • Familiarity with SAD Mag

  • Knowledge of the Vancouver arts & culture scene

Perks & Compensation:

  • SAD Mag is a volunteer-run publication so there is no compensation at this time. However, you can expect some great opportunities and perks, including:

    • Mentorship and support from outgoing SAD Mag staff

    • Camaraderie with the truly incredible team of SAD Mag staff

    • Industry connections and opportunities

    • Experience in a marketing & communications role

    • We also throw great parties

Time Commitment:

As the SAD Mag Marketing & Promotions Designer, you can expect to dedicate a few hours per week to updating social media channels, coordinating event promotion, and meeting with other members of the SAD team in person or virtually. The majority of work is on your own schedule, coordinating with the editorial team as necessary.

This position is great for someone with a flexible schedule and an interest in working in print publishing or the arts & culture scene. Applicants who identify as POC or queer are especially encouraged to apply, as SAD Mag is committed to supporting diversity in the Vancouver publishing industry.

Training and support will be provided by senior staff and the board of directors.

Please apply with a cover letter (in the body of an email is fine) and a portfolio of your design work, to Pamela at design@sadmag.ca by June 30th
