SAD stands for Stories, Arts and Design.
SAD Mag is a volunteer-run, Vancouver-based nonprofit dedicated to showcasing emerging creatives through independently produced arts and culture media. SAD Mag covers local stories in art, design and identity - with a focus on fresh perspectives, striking visuals and bold experimentation. We are proud to be a launchpad for creative careers and a home for the weird, the earnest and the underrepresented. We are committed to learning, unlearning and prioritizing Indigenous voices in our community.
Our mission
SAD Mag exists to help local, emerging artists and writers take the leap by publishing their early works and providing a platform that supports creative risk, growth and visibility.
Our vision
SAD Mag envisions a thriving, justice-minded creative ecosystem in which underrepresented voices shape culture. We strive to be a trusted space for new talent, a collaborator in the arts sector and a joyful, values-driven publication that reflects the diverse lived experiences in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Our core values
Supporting Emerging Creatives. We are a platform to showcase new and early-career artists to our growing audience.
Advancing Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion. Our JEDI policy is a living framework, guiding our editorial choices to hiring, partnerships and team culture.
Building Collaborative Community. We believe in building strong, reciprocal relationships with artists, arts organizations and our readers.
Championing Creative Freedom. We encourage experimentation in all its forms, and are proudly weird and visually driven.
Practicing Accessibility & Honesty. We aim to be open and accountable to our audience and contributors so they feel they are seen and respected.
The SAD Magazine Publishing Society is a registered non-profit and completely volunteer-run. We print locally with MET Fine Printers, a carbon-neutral company.

VOLUNTEERING AND INTERNSHIPS
Check out available positions on our Volunteers page.
While everyone is welcome to apply, we strongly prefer to recruit individuals who are already very familiar with the magazine—so if you hope to get involved on the editorial or design teams, the best method is to contribute to an upcoming issue and let us get to know you.

DIVERSITY & INCLUSION
SAD Mag is an independent Vancouver publication committed to publishing the work of emerging writers and artists of all ages, regardless of formal training or previous experience. We strive toward inclusivity and diversity across all platforms, including our print publication, website, social media, podcast, and in-person events.
We are dedicated to proactively seeking out and publishing underrepresented voices, including folks of any race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, ability, citizenship, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, same sex partnership, age, marital status, family status, immigration status, receipt of public assistance, history of mental health issues, health status, political affiliation, learning difference, level of literacy, accent, first language, body type, physical appearance and abilities, stature or socio-economic status.
We are proud that women, people of colour, Indigenous people, and members of the queer community are represented across our board and staff, but recognize that there is more work to be done to achieve diversity across all of SAD’s activities. We will continue to re-evaluate how we can do better.
If you have questions or feedback, please contact the publishing team at hello@sadmag.ca
