DanceHouse presents the exhilarating North American premiere of Dada Masilo's The Sacrifice, on stage May 5 and 6, 2023, at 8pm at the Vancouver Playhouse.

South Africa's award-winning choreographer Masilo roots her powerful rendition of this ballet classic – inspired by Igor Stravinsky's famous The Rite of Spring – in the rituals, rhythms and sounds of Botswana, including the nation's traditional dance called Tswana.

Masilo is renowned for infusing her works – often inspired by balletic classics such as Giselle and Swan Lake – with contemporary and African dances, speaking to Black identity and feminism.

In preparation for The Sacrifice, Masilo and her company explored what sacrifice meant and still means to the Tswana people, resulting in a "deeply moving and astonishingly fresh" (The Observer) narrative rich in culture, tradition, and meaning.

Following its Vancouver premiere, the production will move on to Ottawa and Toronto, followed by a U.S. tour.
