Cosmic Forecast July 2021

July starts with toes dipped into Cancer season, the best time of year for slowing down and returning home to yourself. The crab is the symbol for Cancer, a creature sturdy enough to handle the intense heat and high salinity in saltwater tidepools and the cold pressure of the ocean floor. Cancer season also evokes the myth of the Selkie, a person who belongs to the sea in seal form but can venture onto the land if they choose. The seal skin they shed when they get on land represents their wild nature and authenticity. In mythology, the seal skin is often stolen from the Selkie, and they can’t go back to the ocean. During Cancer season, the energy encourages you to remember and reclaim your own seal skin and to return to your true home: wherever you feel the most loved and accepted for who you are.

July’s energy is markedly relaxed after what feels like an eternity of intense astrological events. There aren’t as many challenging aspects or frustrating transits. Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Pluto are all Retrograde this month, which opens up space to revisit many aspects of our lives, do some reflection, and move with intention. While Retrogrades can cause delays and highlight obstacles, these challenges force you to go easy on yourself and take the time you need to process what comes up.

This multi-Retrograde energy is really about the collective, and it’s important not to forget that you are part of a network of other humans, including non-humans, and their experiences. When looking back on the last six months, ask yourself, “What have WE been through?” (an idea from this episode of Creative Pep Talk). The whole is as much a part of you as you are a part of it. Understanding where the world and your community is at will help you create art or offerings that resonate and show up for others in the way that’s most needed.

The New Moon in Cancer blesses us with its extra tender sweetness on the 9th. This is a wonderful Moon to do extra self-care, including sleeping lots, bathing, hanging out near or in water, eating a home-cooked meal, gathering with your beloveds, or having a cuddle session. The Moon rules Cancer and feels so at home here. This energy flows easily like the tide, never in a hurry. Deepen your trust in your own cycles and rhythms at this time. Defend the pace that feels best. It’s the pace that you’re meant to go. The Moon has been moving around the Earth on a 28-day schedule for millennia and we don’t ask it to go any faster than that. Mercury joins the Cancer pool party on the 11th, making it easy for you to listen to your heart and receive communication from your intuition on these matters.

A sublime conjunction between Venus and Mars happens in Leo from the 10th to the 16th. These two planets tail each other pretty closely for most of the month. Depending on where Leo is in your chart, you might feel that your needs and desires align with your motivation, energy, and willpower. This conjunction might be uncomfortable for folks with their natal Venus or Mars in Water or Earth signs. There could be pressure to make decisions or have clarity faster or with more conviction than usual. The conjunction is Square Uranus and Opposite Saturn, which intensifies the energy. It could be energizing or overwhelming, so try to do what excites you most those days and don’t overexert yourself on obligations or “have to’s.” This transit is sparkly—hot vax summer, indeed.

The month wraps up with a Full Moon in Aquarius on the 23rd, and Jupiter, in its Retrograde path, heads back into that sign as well. This astrology will illuminate what’s hidden (the Moon) and expand the possibilities (Jupiter) in the realms of imagination, innovation, creativity, and futurism. The energy is aspirational, and it’s a great time to research new ideas, envision the next steps for a project, and think about how your ideal life or a utopia for all could emerge.
