Cosmic Forecast June 2021

Cosmic Forecast June 2021

June comes in on the heels of the powerful Full Moon eclipse in Sagittarius that happened on May 26th. Eclipses occur in pairs, and this event typically referred to as an Eclipse Portal, wraps up with the New Moon in Gemini on June 10th. In my experience, eclipse portals can feel very intense. The Moon is about the body and what’s happening on our emotional plane. The communication we get via the Moon is through our feelings. I find that it can be challenging to rustle up the energy to do spells and rituals that aren’t honouring my feelings during the Full and New Moons, but especially during Eclipse Portals.

AMBROSIA BY ANDRE BARNWELL

AMBROSIA BY ANDRE BARNWELL

Featured artist of the month Andre Barnwell creates mesmerizing figures in bright colours that intimately meld together, transmitting sensual energy and connection. In Barnwell's interview with SAD web editor Hannah Seraphim he shared that he finds R&B music really influential to his experimental art approach.

“Time and time again, I will be listening to R&B music, and they’ll be talking about sex. They’ll be talking about that with regards to flowers or even animals, and just things that are primal in nature.” - Andre Barnwell

This month's playlist is oozing sensual beats. It got rhythm, blues, smooth jazz, and mood lighting. Barnwell's illustration, Ambrosia, inspired this comforting mix that will help release some tension. Light a scented candle, lean back, and relax.

MEET MAY ARTIST OF THE MONTH: Andre Barnwell

When Andre Barnwell started his erotic art brand Sex and Sandwiches in 2014, he intentionally chose not to have sex. Moving from Toronto to Vancouver for his career in animation, design, and directing at Titmouse, he decided that it would be the perfect time to try out celibacy for 3 months. This sexless stint fueled Barnwell’s creativity and allowed time for self-reflection. Every night when the sun went down, he worked away at multiple new pieces resulting in a whopping 96-piece collection for Sex and Sandwiches.

EXPLORING IMAGE AGENCY IN EXHIBIT: IMAGES THAT TAKE, IMAGES THAT GIVE

With the increase in cosmetic procedures during the COVID-19 pandemic, video calls have evidently changed the way we see ourselves. Displayed from March 18th-27th at the Audain Gallery, Images that Take, Images that Give explore how images—such as our own video call reflections—express agency.

SEEING 20/20 IN STEVEN AUDIA’S PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT: 20/2020

Steven Audia’s exhibition 20/2020, a small collection of photographs showing at The James Black Gallery, is a far cry from the show that he had been preparing for pre-pandemic. As with most of the past year, plans have been replaced with something else entirely. A carefully curated showcase of photos taken by Audia from 2010-2020 gave way to 20/2020, a project that grew organically—a quality that translates into the images themselves.
