As much as I’ve been lamenting the end of summer, I have to admit I’m a sucker for the spooky season. Walking on crispy fall leaves, dressing in outrageous costumes and watching scary movies are some of my favourite activities, after all. Outside my apartment window is a beautiful view of the changing leaves, which I will soak up every second of before they inevitably fall victim to the incoming rain.
With the spooky season comes a range of spooky events! Creature features, horror-inspired improv and a witchy art show await you in this week’s list. (Don’t worry, there are some more uplifting options too for all you scaredy cats out there). Read on to find your next scare and don’t forget to subscribe to the Mood Swing newsletter to get the list straight to your inbox every Thursday!
IMPROV HORROR MOVIE ☆ If you’re looking to embrace the spooky season but hate scary movies, The Improv Centre on Granville Island has a new show perfect for you. I Know What You Did Last Weekend spoofs ‘90s slasher flicks with all of the laughs, none of the screams and a new murder every night, chosen by the audience! You can catch the show every Friday and Saturday until Nov. 1.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 3 AND SATURDAY, OCTOBER 4, 7:30 PM ☆ THE IMPROV CENTRE ☆ TICKETS ($29.50+)
HORROR TRIVIA ☆ From the folks behind the indie BIPOC film festival Horror in Seconds comes a new spine-tingling and blood-curdling event! Enjoy an open mic of spooky stories and poems from local artists, followed by a round of horror trivia with prizes from horror mag Rue Morgue. Meet other horror fans and eat as much Halloween candy as your teeth can handle!
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 3, 7PM - 9PM ☆ MOUNT PLEASANT (ADDRESS AVAILABLE TO TICKET HOLDERS) ☆ TICKETS ($15)
SCARY SLICE ART SHOW ☆ Check out this collective art show at Slice of Life in honour of all things witchy and wicked. More than 15 local artists will have their works on display and will be around from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. to answer questions and discuss their pieces. Grab a $5 ticket online or pay what you can at the door. Ticket sales are profit-shared with the artists and count for entry in the door prize draw!
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 4, 3PM - 8PM ☆ SLICE OF LIFE, 1636 VENABLES ST ☆ PWYC
VANCOUVER INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ☆ Shifting to some less spooky vibes, the Vancouver International Film Festival is now on until Oct. 12. While many of the big-name flicks may already be sold out, there are still tons of local and international gems left to discover. If the full program of over 170 films is too overwhelming, I recommend you check out the Altered States series, a lineup of the festival’s campiest and wackiest offerings, including Fucktoys, Dead Lover and A Useful Ghost.
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 2 - SUNDAY, OCTOBER 12 ☆ VARIOUS LOCATIONS ☆ TICKETS ($16 - $21)
QUEER LIFE DRAWING ☆ TINYDOG Studio & Gallery is offering a series of queer life drawing sessions this fall, celebrating queer bodies through self-directed drawing sessions with rotating models from the community. This week’s session features Enby 6 icon and drag thing Mx. Bukuru! All skill levels are welcome and drawing boards, pencils and paper will be provided.
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 7, 7PM - 8:30PM ☆ TINYDOG STUDIO & GALLERY, 44 W 4TH AVE ☆ TICKETS ($25)
