Another year of VIFF coming and going meant I could return to in-theatre screenings for the first time since the pandemic began. Naturally, my re-introduction was a little bit awkward. Despite this initial trepidation, I wanted to highlight two films that have stayed with me since my initial viewing. Two Sundays ago, the Three Flying Birds Collective held the closing night for their stunning production, Wings Over Water. Created by Anjalica Solomon (they/she/he), Shane [Chantal] Dobles Gerring (they/she), and Sarvin Esmaeili (she/they), Wings Over Water is an experimental play that follows Baby Bird’s journey in understanding diaspora and finding home and belonging.

MEET SEPTEMBER ARTIST OF THE MONTH: JASON BEMPONG

While juggling these art forms, Jason Bempong spends most of his time focusing on Sleepless Mindz, his art and fashion brand, dance and dance battles, as well as acting. He recently was a part of this year’s Vancouver Mural Festival opening ceremony and was also a part of the encore celebration this past weekend. “I sleep when I can,” Bempong jokes.
