Goodbye April, hello May! It’s that special time of the year where the weather gaslights us into thinking summer is here, only to bring the rain back for “June-uary.” This brings us to a bit of a crossroads. On one hand, you could seize the moment and take advantage of the blue skies, warmer weather and sunny disposition of locals. Alternatively, you could practice patience and hibernate for just a little longer, knowing summer is part and parcel with packed social calendars and the pressure to make the most out of a fleeting season. Whatever path you choose, I hope these affordable local events will help you along the way.

TRANS STRIP NIGHT ☆ Quick! Make like a Vancouverite and last-minute cancel tonight’s plans—The Cobalt is hosting a trans-led strip night. Fluxxx is described as “satanic, demented and downright sick.” Part filth, part queer joy, it promises to be a full night of fun.
THURSDAY, APRIL 30 ☆ 917 MAIN STREET ☆ DOORS 7PM | SHOW 8PM ☆ $20/PWYC

VERSES FESTIVAL ☆ Poetry takes centre stage at Verses Festival! From now until Saturday, May 2, you can take part in everything from workshops to stage-to-page showcases and a community poetry jam. The festivities at Chill X Studio culminate in the Canadian Individual Poetry Slam Finals, featuring SPIN El Poeta.
APRIL 27- MAY 2 ☆ 2270 MANITOBA ST. ☆ $10 ADV | $15 DOOR

MAKERS MARKET ☆  Head to the Heritage Hall this weekend for a pop‑up bringing together local small businesses, handmade goods, sweet treats and thoughtful finds. Browse, snack, discover a new favourite vendor and enjoy a low‑key weekend wander with friends (or your pet!) while supporting community makers.
MAY 2–3 ☆ 3102 MAIN ST. ☆ 11AM–5PM ☆ FREE

STORYTELLING OPEN MIC ☆ Enabling Arts, the same venue that hosted our launch party for Issue 39: Taste, is putting on a story telling open mic this Sunday, May 3. And Then What Happened invites writers to share personal or fictional stories and receive audience feedback. It’s a space to test out new work, listen closely and play a role in supportive storytelling.
MAY 3 ☆ 343 RAILWAY ST, #104 ☆ 6–8PM ☆ $15

MAKE A SIGN AND CHEER ☆ The BMO Vancouver Marathon (half + full) is happening Sunday, May 3, and if you aren’t running or hiding from the crowds, give cheering a try! Grab some markers, make a sign, and post up at Devonian Park (with my big, fun obnoxious run club EVRC) to help carry folks through that final kilometre. Maybe you’ll see why I think races bring out the best in people.
SUNDAY, MAY 3 ☆ DEVONIAN PARK ☆ 9 AM - 1PM ☆ FREE
