Let me describe to you the difference between a song and a sigh, between a recording and a live show. The act of being together in time, through the measure of music. Let me describe to you a community coming together at the end of last month for a shared purpose: to experience music at 648 Kingsway with Hoodie Browns, Lalune, and Lovely Company.
Read MoreWith views of mountains, alleyways paved between detached homes in Hastings Sunrise, and the sandy and grassy area of Trout Lake, Golden Delicious emulates the familiarity of home and the meaning behind it; what it means to feel at home with yourself, your family and those around you. Jason Karman's first feature-length film premiere at VIFF examines the coming-of-age story of a young Asian Canadian navigating his sexuality, the people he cares about, and his parents he doesn’t want to let down.
Read MoreFebruary is an in-between month where we move away from the threshold of the new year and settle back into a more familiar rhythm. The astrology this month is steady, yet there’s tension as we prepare for some big transits come March. Pluto teethers on the edge of Capricorn before it moves into Aquarius while Saturn is getting ready to head from Aquarius into Pisces. Most of the planets are in both the final signs (Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces) and the first sign of the zodiac (Aries). The stars are preparing for a changing of the guard. It’s a month of endings and rebirth as, collectively, we enter into a phase that’s focused on wisdom, our elders, and maturation.
Read MoreSell Out is a series by interdisciplinary artist Angela Fama (she/they), who co-creates conversations with individual artists across Vancouver. Questioning ideas of artistry, identity, “day jobs,” and how they intertwine, Fama settles in with each artist (at a local café of their choice) and asks the same series of questions. With one roll of medium format film, Fama captures portraits of the artist, after the verbal conversations have been had.

The album, like Dust, was immersed in pop colour, featuring an arrangement of talent from artists such as producer Please Be Nice and rapper Tea Fannie.

learning how to climb her springing over the fence slamming my palms on the brick pavement and racing down the hot alley.
Like December, January is a threshold month. As we pass through it, we enter a new phase and leave behind the previous one. No transition is instant. Over the course of this month, we’ll learn just how long we need to make shifts and transform in our own ways in preparation for the year ahead. While we might be used to simply surviving the holidays and jumping into the new year with a sense of urgency to get started on the goals or intentions we’ve set, this January really calls us to slow down and prioritize reflection and repose. The astrology gives us more space to listen to ourselves and to get the rest we need to take action when the time is right.
