Mood Swing (November 13, 2025)

ILLUSTRATION FOR MR. BURNS, A POST-ELECTRIC PLAY BY JONATHAN WOOD. COURTESY OF UBC THEATRE AND FILM.

I feel like with the shorter days, the weeks feel shorter, too. I am in awe that another week has passed me by when it feels like all I’ve done is work and watch Real Housewives of Salt Lake City (which, to be fair, is a very enjoyable way to spend my time).

I have made it my personal goal to get out to more events with other human faces this week. If you’d like to join me in braving the chilly air and dark skies, keep reading for art shows, drag shows, a zine fair and more, and don’t forget to subscribe to the Mood Swing newsletter to get the list straight to your inbox every Thursday!

IN·TER·PLAY ART SHOW ☆ August Studios presents "in·ter·play,” an exhibition featuring work from Richelle Greabeiel and Sarah Delaney that explores the connections between time and material. Meet the artists at the opening reception on Thursday, Nov. 13, at 6 p.m. or pop by the studio from Nov. 14 to 16 to enjoy the show on your own time.

NOVEMBER 13 - 16 ☆ AUGUST STUDIOS, 1320 E PENDER ST ☆ FREE!

THE STARWALKER EXPERIENCE ☆ I featured the first weekend of Transform Festival in last week’s list and couldn’t help but give them another plug this week for this killer show on Friday, Nov. 14. The Starwalker Experience promises to bring to life songs from the award-winning stage musical turned film Starwalker, which tells the story of an East Vancouver IndigiQueer drag artist. Expect incredible vocal performances, a live band and drag from artists Ilona Verley, Beth, Synthia Kiss, and HAZEL!

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 7:30PM ☆ VANCOUVER PLAYHOUSE, 600 HAMILTON ST ☆ TICKETS ($19 +)

ZINE HARVEST If you love zine culture or you’re looking to dive deeper into the zine scene, check out the next Zine Harvest this Saturday, Nov. 15! Zines are a timelessly tactile way to share ideas, circulate information and express complex feelings. Meet some local zine makers, get inspired and add to your collection!

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 11AM - 5PM ☆ SUN WAH CENTRE, 268 KEEFER ST ☆ FREE!

MR. BURNS, A POST-ELECTRIC PLAY ☆ Does a post-apocalyptic musical retelling of an old Simpsons episode sound as awesome to you as it does to me? UBC Theatre and Film’s latest student production, Mr. Burns, a post-electric play, explores the power of pop culture and memory through a darkly funny retelling of the classic cartoon. Check out the preview show this Wednesday, Nov. 19 or catch it on another night until Dec. 6!

NOVEMBER 19 - DECEMBER 6 ☆ FREDRIC WOOD THEATRE ☆ TICKETS ($11 - $27)

MY FAVOURITE TRIVIA ☆ I love bar trivia, but all other bar trivias pale in comparison to my favourite from IQ 2000. It always has the perfect balance of variety and challenge that keeps me going back each week. The best part is that it runs at multiple bars across the Lower Mainland every Monday to Thursday, so you can find your go-to local spot to test your knowledge on categories like “Glee covers” and “Emojis that don’t exist.” My favourite is on Tuesdays at The American (if you go lookout for my team, the Gay Street Alliance)!

MONDAYS - THURSDAYS ☆ VARIOUS LOCATIONS ☆ FREE!
