In honour of Black History Month, this week’s Mood Swing features events that center Black artists and help support the preservation of Black culture and history in our city. February has just started, so I’ll continue highlighting BHM events throughout the month, but this week had so many amazing, accessible celebrations of Black culture and creativity that I had to dedicate the whole list to them.

BLACK BRILLIANCE ON SCREEN ☆ Vancouver’s Central Library is offering free screenings of iconic works of Black cinema every Friday afternoon all month long. The Black Brilliance on Screen series highlights films that explore identity, resillience and racism, kicking off with In the Heat of the Night (1967) this Friday, Feb. 6, at 2 p.m.

DANCE JAM & ART SOCIAL ☆ AMA HOUSE hosts a monthly dance jam and art social with their next event hitting New Amsterdam Cafe this Saturday, Feb, 7. Groove to amapiano and house music, learn South and West African dance moves, shop with pop-up vendors and get crafty with an interactive art activity.

VISIT THE BLACK ARTS CENTER ☆ The Black Arts Center is celebrating the opening of their Black History Month exhibition, From Horn to Home, this Saturday, Feb. 7, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Focusing on East Africa, the show explores each artist’s relationship with the concept of home through mediums of poetry, language, photography and video. Catch the opening night for free henna and sweet treats, or enjoy the exhibit while it’s on display until Feb. 28.

DRAG BRUNCH FUNDRAISER ☆ Get ready to gag for some of the city’s best drag talent at Melanin Magic, a drag brunch fundraiser at Score on Davie this Saturday, Feb. 7, at 12 p.m. The star-studded all-Black cast includes performances by Asstrix Banks, Cleopatra, Le$bean, Mx. Black Ice, Rainbow Glitz and Rich Elle. All proceeds will go to Hogan’s Alley Society, a non-profit dedicated to highlighting and preserving Black history in B.C.

THE COOKOUT ☆ Everyone’s invited to The Cookout, a Black-led celebration of creativity and community this Saturday, Feb. 7 at Skylight Warehouse. With live performances, local vendors, Ghanaian food, a gallery space and DJs spinning until late, there’s something sure to leave everyone satisfied.
